Chapter

Thirty-Five

JACE

Jace stood in the middle of the training room with Ramu, surprised at the plain features of the area. It had a basic stone floor with smooth walls that had a few inscriptions on them, presumably to limit the destruction rogue chi blasts did to the room. There were a few other cultivators spread out through the space, but none of them paid the other occupants of the room any mind.

Ramu spread his hands wide, drawing Jace’s attention back. “First off, you need to get used to your new body.”

Jace nodded, the simple movement proving Ramu’s point. On the walk over he’d gained greater control of his limbs, but he still jerked some when he moved.

“Hit me.”

Raising an eyebrow, Jace said, “That’s the way to get used to my new body? Hit you?”

Ramu raised an eyebrow in return. “I know Alira is the one who’s annoyed with me the most often, but you can’t say you haven’t had moments where you didn’t also want to punch me.”

Jace shrugged. “You aren’t wrong.” Crouching, he cycled chi through his legs and sprung at Ramu.

The madman sidestepped, and Jace barely caught a glimpse of the grin on his friend’s face before his eyes widened and he crashed into the wall, making the room shake.

Blinking through the dazed feeling, he stood and spun toward Ramu. Though the strike left him aching, nothing felt broken, and he didn’t even need to cycle chi to clear his head before it felt like he hadn’t hit anything.

Grin spreading across his face, he rolled onto the balls of his feet, shaking his arms out. “Ramu, this is incredible. Did you see that? I can hit a wall with Divine Stage strength and not break anything. Can you imagine what Ouyang would have done if I’d faced him with this much power? He’d have run like the coward he was!” Bringing his hands up, he threw a few practice punches before freezing, blinking and tilting his head at Ramu. “Have you always had such a furry face?” he asked. Every hair on his friend’s face stood out as if it was as coarse as the ones on his scalp, making him look like a bushy beast.

Ramu snorted. “Yes, thank you for the observation. I’m no more furry now than when I was born. I thought I told you to hit me?”

Grinning again, Jace leapt forward once more, only to stumble as his feet tangled in themselves and he crashed to the ground, hitting his chin on the smooth floor.

Trying to ignore the other cultivators laughing at him, he grumbled as he got up. What timing for all of them to start paying attention to anything else besides their own warmups. Hopefully it would make them underestimate him in the ring, though.

Ramu shook his head. “Cycle your Mind chi. And work on these constructs, since apparently I’m still too challenging of a target for you despite all the training we’ve done together.”

Jace wanted to point out that Ramu had done
